Information About Well: Domestic Well 4A
AWWA members and ECI 148B students met with Lew Pollock, Superintendent for UC Davis Water & Gas Utilities, to learn about the UC Davis water supply system. Lew demonstrated how the six on-campus potable-use wells that collect water from aquifers 800-1400 feet underground are monitored and controlled using a SCADA system. Pumping rates are adjusted to achieve optimum pressure throughout the system, which is created by the pressure head from the water tower. Potable water is used to meet daily water supply demands for drinking water, restrooms, residence halls, fire flow, and to operate chillers at the Central Heating and Cooling Plant. Students also visited a recently installed supply well to learn about the design and operation of the well and the disinfection system.
Lew also discussed the opportunity for student internships with the utilities department as well as changes that may affect the campus supply if additional surface water from the Sacramento River is used to meet the potable water demands.
