Location: Oroville, CA
Our first Technical Tour for 2013 was Saturday, November 23rd at the State Water Project Lake Oroville facilities. This amazing tour of the Oroville Dam was led by Jana Frazier from the Department of Water Resources. At the Lake Oroville Visitor Center we were given a short presentation, were able to drive across the dam (stopped for pictures) and viewed some of the dam’s external structures. Following the tour, we hiked across from the dam’s spillway to end the day.

UC Davis Well Tour
Date: May 22, 2013
Location: UC Davis WWTP Well 4A
Map to Location: UC Davis Domestic Well 4A Map
Information About Well: Domestic Well 4A
AWWA members and ECI 148B students met with Lew Pollock, Superintendent for UC Davis Water & Gas Utilities, to learn about the UC Davis water supply system. Lew demonstrated how the six on-campus potable-use wells that collect water from aquifers 800-1400 feet underground are monitored and controlled using a SCADA system. Pumping rates are adjusted to achieve optimum pressure throughout the system, which is created by the pressure head from the water tower. Potable water is used to meet daily water supply demands for drinking water, restrooms, residence halls, fire flow, and to operate chillers at the Central Heating and Cooling Plant. Students also visited a recently installed supply well to learn about the design and operation of the well and the disinfection system.
Lew also discussed the opportunity for student internships with the utilities department as well as changes that may affect the campus supply if additional surface water from the Sacramento River is used to meet the potable water demands.
